This is a pairing of two classic, groundbreaking volumes recording the Life of Jesus as it is detailed in the Apocryphal Gospels and other extra-canonical sources (such as were known and available for reading at the time). For modern readers unfamiliar with these "apocryphal" sources, these two works provide a useful introduction to the subject. The first title is The Life of Jesus according to Extra-Canonical Sources, by Bernard Pick (1887). The 'Life' of Jesus is narrowly divided into 105 chapters and specific episodes, with footnotes documenting the various sources. A much more detailed and extensive critical treatment can be found in The Apocryphal and Legendary Life of Christ, by James Dequincey Donehoo (1903). Each chapter is well-annotated, with convenient footnote references, indicating the specific source, which you can quickly look at by hovering over the numerical reference with your cursor.
To aid in your study, we have made active, wherever possible, links to the English translations of the extra-canonical material in our collection of the "Early Church Fathers" writings.
