A. T. Pierson - The Divine Art of Preaching and The Making of a Sermon

Two works on preaching by Arthur Tappan (A. T.) Pierson (1837-1911). Pierson was a leading preacher and supporter of foreign missions in the late 19th and early 20th century. An American Baptist pastor, Pierson's preaching and lecturing ministry overseas brought him in contact with a number of missionaries and evangelists such as George Müller, A. J. Gordon, and Charles Spurgeon, who he succeeded as preacher at the famed London Metropolitan Tabernacle in 1891. A. T. Pierson was a prolific preacher and writer, with many books and published sermons to his name. He is perhaps best known today for his support and involvment with missionary organizations and for his writings on missions and evangelism. He also wrote extensively on the Bible, both from the standpoint of apologetics and to aid students and pastors in Bible study. The two works in this collection are specifically devoted to preaching:

• The Divine Art of Preaching (1892)—Covers a range of topics from the inspiration of Scripture to the approach and methods one should take in preparing sermons
• The Making of a Sermon (2nd revised edition, 1907)—A collection of more than 200 studies and outlines on select Scripture passages which have homiletical value both as an example of how one may develop a sermon, and for the exposition of various passages.
