History of the Jewish People in the Time of Jesus Christ

Schürer (1844-1910) was a leading theologian and scholar at the universities of Leipzig, Giessen, Kiel, and Göttingen (1895-1910). He founded and edited the influential theological journal (Theologische Literaturzeitung), along with Adolf von Harnack. However, today he is known almost exclusively through his pioneering work A History of the Jewish People in the Time of Jesus (Geschichte des jüdischen Volkes im zeitalter Jesu Christi, 1886-90). Immensely popular and influential from its first publication, this classic work has gone through numerous printings, including a recent revised edition. This is the English translation of the second revised edition (1891). It remains one of the best compendiums of information on the Jewish background of the New Testament, and continues to be consulted and cited regularly by scholars today. It is an indispensible resource for any series student of the New Testament and early Christianity.
