A new dictionary, published in 2004, of words, phrases and situations in Bible order.

The New Testament is a fascinating collection of documents that illuminate the life and ministry of Jesus. To get the most out of the amazing number of details and nuance in its texts, a firm grasp of the scriptural context, as well as the cultural and historical background of the time is essential. W. Harold Mare's New Testament Background Commentary is just such a contemporary resource for original language word study and cultural and historical commentary. Your study will benefit from:

  • The best elements of a Bible commentary and dictionary for effective searching by verse or topic
  • Concise explanations of the original language words
  • Unique insights from Dr. Mare's lifetime of archaeological research

This powerful commentary will make familiar passages come alive during your daily study times, and you will be amazed by the fresh insight it will add to your research for preaching and teaching. Specifically, this resource contains:

  • Biblical linguistic nuances,
  • Cultural settings,
  • Historical information, and results of archaeological excavations as they relate to the biblical story, cities, and locations;
  • A wealth of Biblical cross-references, and
  • Many bibliographical sources that are cited for the reader's study and research.

Dr. Mare's great passion was the study of Biblical Archaeology. He served as director and professor for the Near East School of Archaeology in Jerusalem in 1963 and was a leader of the Near East Archaeological Society. His many books, articles, and lectures helped both students and scholars better interpret the history and language of Scripture. In 1980, Dr. Mare became director of the excavation at Abila of the Decapolis, in Jordan. He organized continuing digs at the site for over 20 years. Covenant Theological Seminary now houses the W. Harold Mare Archaeology Institute, a museum and research lab that is home to hundreds of artifacts from Abila and other Holy Land sites.

As with all reference content added to your PC Study Bible library, the New Testament Background Commentary takes full advantage of powerful cross-referencing to every other linked resource in your library. Simply click on any Greek/ Hebrew/Aramaic word for more original language information.
