Product Information

This is the first installment of Biblesoft's The Scholar's Essentials series—classic works which are essential for the library of every scholar and serious student of Scripture. These selected reference works represent the finest scholarship from the past two centuries, detailed and definitive studies which paved the way for all the works which were to follow. While many of these titles can be purchased individually, or are included in other collections, we felt that it was worth bringing them here together in one place, so that scholars, pastors, and dedicated students can enhance their library quickly (and afforably) through this series.

Our initial selection covers the theme of New Testament Background—works which examine the historical, cultural, and linguistic background of the New Testament. Here are the titles included in this collection:

  • History of the Jewish People in the Time of Jesus, by Emil Schurer
  • Light from the Ancient East: The New Testament Illustrated by Texts of the Greco-Roman World, by Adolf Deissmann
  • The Words of Jesus, by Gustav Dalman
  • New Testament Studies, by Adolf von Harnack
  • Introduction to the New Testament in Greek, by B. F. Westcott and F. J. A. Hort (part of their famous critical edition of the NT)
  • Grammar of Septuagint Greek, with Commentary on Selected Passages, by F. C. Conybeare and St. George Stock

In addition, we include the writings of Philo of Alexandria, Flavius Josephus, and the early Christian Apostolic Fathers (J. B. Lightfoot edition), in the Greek text (with translation). Above all else, these writings are most useful as a supplement for studying the Greek of the New Testament. A final bonus work, Philo and Holy Scripture, by H. E. Ryle, examines Philo's use of the (Greek) Old Testament, with its parallels for the quotations and treatment of Scripture by the New Testament authors.
