This collection combines the titles Light from the Ancient East: The New Testament Illustrated by Recently Discovered Texts of the Graeco-Roman World, an English translation of Adolf Deissmann's landmark work Licht vom Osten ("Light from the East", 1908-9), with the more recent publication The Greco-Roman World of the New Testament Era, by James S. Jeffers (InterVarsity Press, 1999). This is an ideal pairing—classic and modern—dealing with an important aspect of Biblical Studies: the social, cultural, and religious background of the New Testament and early Christianity.
