James Orr was a well-known Scottish Presbyterian minister and church history scholar. He was the editor of the highly regarded International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, compiled from nearly 10,000 entries written by over 200 different Bible scholars and teachers. (ISBE is a conservative, Bible and church history encyclopedia that has remained in extremely high use to this day).  Orr was an early defender of the evangelical scholarship supporting the reliability of the scriptures and the credibility of Christian historical views of scriptural inspiration and completeness.  He was a vocal critic of theological liberalism. Orr was a contributor to the famous “Fundamentals” series of the early 1900’s. Even when younger, in the early 1890’s he delivered a series of lectures that later made up the influential volume: “The Christian View of God and the World.”
