JW. Harold Mare (1918-2004) served as a pastor for ten years in Colorado and North Carolina. In 1963, he became a founding member of Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis and was a professor of New Testament there from 1963 until his retirement in 1984. He also served as the president of the Near East Archaeological Society from 1971 to 1992 and was president of the St. Louis society of the Archaeological Institute of American during 1978-79. Dr. Mare was one of the translators of the New International Version, and contributed the commentary on First Corinthians in The Expositor's Bible Commentary. He wrote Mastering New Testament Greek (1975), and The Archaeology of the Jerusalem Area (1987).
