After graduating from Pembroke Hall, Cambridge in 1672, he left to begin his first chaplaincy. He was known for his ability speak with a common vocabulary and a zeal for foreign missions. 

His chief work, Expository Notes with Practical Observations, has served as a daily Bible study for many families due to it's accessible wording and format.
