A Comprehensive Systematic Theology that Masterfully Presents Current Scholarship with Historical Perspective

Commanding in academic prowess and commitment to biblical authority, this 1280-page reference, just released in 2005, is a wide-ranging, well-directed and sharp-sighted guide that is marked by genuine scholarship, doctrinal clarity, and historical insight.

Robert Culver is a veteran teacher in the classic evangelical and reformed stream of Christian understanding, however, this volume goes well beyond the exposition of historical doctrine to a complete examination of the exegetical resources for understanding doctrine and its formulation into a system of thought about God and his creation.

Sola Scriptura

In the Introduction to Systematic Theology , Culver unashamedly acknowledges, “We have the canon of Holy Scripture and accept it as inspired and truthful in all its parts. We gratefully adopt and promote all the positive fruits of modern study of the science of interpretation and both special and general introduction to the Bible.” He goes on to say, “…biblical truth should pervade every paragraph of this volume and scripturally derived norms should control as well as inform every sentence.” The result is a systematic theology that Walter C. Kaiser, Jr. regards as, “…one of the strongest examples of the exegetical use of the Bible in forming a systematic theology for our day.”

While no previous knowledge of theology is demanded, this is a challenging reference work that, by the author's own admission, is not a book for casual readers. Systematic Theology aims to meet minds where they are now and focus them on: ·

  • Biblical and historical matters essential to the doctrine of God
  • The doctrine of man as created
  • The doctrine of man as fallen
  • Christ – his person and work, and
  • The doctrine of salvation and the doctrine of last things

In the midst of nuanced explanations of theology, Culver pulls back to provide valuable introductions to each major section. Pastors and educators seeking solid source materials for teaching and preaching are sure to benefit from Systematic Theology's straight-forward approach, which has been honed over Dr. Culver's long career of serving as a pastor and distinguished seminary professor.

Though this may appear to be a reference requiring a high degree of dedication to fully appreciate, it also provides a wealth of quickly accessible material when added to your PC Study Bible library. For example, there are excellent sections on the Names of God and the Attributes of God providing much more information than many publications specifically devoted to these subjects.
