Joseph Benson was a young English cleric who became a follower and personal friend of John Wesley, and engaged in much of the controversy between the Calvinistic and “Free Will” camps then raging in Britain. Dismissed from a teaching position at an Oxford school for his resistance to Calvinism, he found preaching and teaching positions among the Methodists in Wales and elsewhere in England.
Benson was often controversial and was not afraid to challenge even other Methodists when he considered them wrong in doctrinal matters. He even disagreed with Wesley on a number of positions and led a movement (unsuccessfully) to establish the Methodist church as a “daughter church” of the Church of England. Wesley would not support it. Benson became editor of the Methodist Magazine, and held the post for the rest of his life
In his later years he was asked by his conference to write a commentary on the whole Bible. He did this over ten years, writing “from 5 AM to 11 PM” while in his 70’s. He completed the last volume shortly before his death.
An interesting story about Benson’s death is told by a contemporary historian. Shortly before he died, he was visited by Dr. Adam Clarke and another cleric. “The Doctor [Clarke] was very much affected at seeing him so much reduced, and said, ‘You know me, sir?’ ‘O yes; it is Dr. Clarke.’ ‘Well, sir, you are not far from the kingdom of God.’ ‘I am not only not far from the kingdom of God, but I am sure of finding God in that kingdom,’ was the reply. He afterwards said to the Doctor, ‘I have no hope of being saved but by grace through faith…
